Last night we had a power outage in Santa Monica. We were without electricity only for about an hour of the evening, but I had to find my way in the dark to get flashlights and the fire starter for candles, and I tripped over Elvis, one of my three dogs! This made me wish that I’d been a little more prepared…

Power can go out for any number of reasons, and, living in California, earthquakes are always a possibility. At Christmas time, I happened to buy a bunch of those little battery-powered LED candles, which, I realized last night, are a brilliant idea, because they’re not a fire hazard, so you can put them anywhere. They’re also great to use year-round – plant many around your house, and you’ll never have to worry in the case of a power outage!

We’ve had it pretty easy for a long time, but it’s important to be prepared. Today I am buying a bunch of flashlights and more batteries, and I will put it in my calendar at the end of every year to throw out the old batteries. Be more prepared than I was!
